Many books have been published about Charles Bridge over the past centuries. None of them, however, has dealt in detail with the iconography of its sculptural decoration. The ideological aspect of the individual works was the main motive for their creation. This publication contains a complete history and description of all the statues and sculptures that have been and are located here. However, some of the works have completely disappeared over time. For the first time, we encounter here complete depictions of sculptures present, past and unrealised, including all surviving drawings or models. This work also includes a description of the artistic decoration of the bridge towers and Křižovnice Square. The authors, as leading experts, also set the record straight on a number of myths about the Charles Bridge that can be found in countless articles and publications about this unique monument, which fulfils a transport, artistic and spiritual function. The book has the parameters of a scholarly publication, including extensive notes, yet it is written in an accessible form and takes the reader step by step through the history of the sculptural decoration of the Charles Bridge up to the present day.
